The 650-lb Virgin David Smith: What an inspirational story that aired Sunday night on the TLC cable channel. It took some four years, but David Smith went from being a 650-lb virgin down to 220 pounds, but even that left him with problems, including excess skin that left him looking grotesque. But the medical profession stepped in and helped the 650-lb virgin David Smith look more presentable via plastic surgery and even some dental work. Yet his years of being socially isolated left this man no good at the dating game, and this program on TLC showed his skills at dating being improved, as he was very awkward talking to women for most of his life. His personal trainer Chris Powell, who saved David's life, also encouraged him with this endeavor of romance, as they were shown as best friends and roomies. His story is about change beginning by looking in the mirror, which one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs allude to.

What I find most inspirational about this program wasn't even the main focus. The 650-lb Virgin program briefed over his exercise and diet program which caused his massive weight loss, and he's now a personal trainer himself who still eats healthy and exercises. I never got this bad with my weight, but I've always lived by this adage: stay out of the hole by not digging it in the first place. But at least the 650-lb virgin David Smith decided to take action before it was too late, and did so the long and hard way, as he refused to get the drastic gastric bypass surgery.

But even I could've gotten myself into that position that so many people do with weight: that terrible burden of obesity. In 1994, I began to take more notice of my weight at age 27. I hardly ever exercised as an adult and ate tons of junk food, and I was about 12-13 pounds away from being overweight when I'd been basically very skinny all my existence. Getting that close to being overweight scared me straight to where I began a walking regimen during the cold Fall of 1994 (all autumns get cold in Wyoming), but by the Winter of 2003, my walking graduated to a running regimen. I recall being able to run just five minutes twice a day, and it was torture, but over time it built up to where I can run 30-35 minutes twice a day, and I've kept my weight at around 130 pounds. I began addressing my diet in 2007 to fight high cholesterol levels, and am eating the healthiest diet I've ever had as an adult (plus taking nutritional supplements). I've been able to get my cholesterol levels at optimal ranges without taking cholesterol medication! Knock on wood.

Yet for David Smith, the former 650-lb virgin, his physical health being on the right road still left him feeling very romantically lonely, and watching him make the play for the women was kind of hard, because this dating game is hard, especially for someone who (as Wall Street protagonist Gordon Gekko quipped about either being on the inside or the outside) has been mostly left on the outside of life because of his long time obesity.

The moral to the 650-lb Virgin story of David Smith is that if you want something in this life, you have to be the one to initiate the action to getting it (and believe that it can be done in the first place), and along the way, you'll find the people and circumstances that will further your cause.

Chupacabra pictures of a chupacabra found in Texas back up last year's chupacabras news. Do these photos really show a chupacabra or just an ugly dog? Is it another Bigfoot hoax? Is el chupacabra found for good? You might be surprised.

Chupacabra Found - A Brief History of Recent News

Cuero, Texas was ground zero for chupacabra pictures in 2007, when a lifelong hunter found an odd piece of roadkill that looked like a hairless dog with metallic blue skin and sizeable fangs. Deeming it to be a chupacabra, the alleged chupacabra pictures - posted on Fox News - pointed to a 40-pound creature.

Cuero - or Quero - once again made news with chupacabra pictures, when in 2008 a deputy recorded a creature looking like a chupacabra. The dashboard video - posted on CNN - showcases a creature that looks eerily like a mix of dog and coyote that could easily weigh in at more than 40 pounds. At that time, we reported on these findings in the article "Chupucabra Goat Sucker Puts Cryptozoology in the News Spotlight."

Chupacabra Facts - or Fiction?

Call it chupucabra, chubacabra, or chupa, the recent avalanche of chupacabra pictures makes it hard to doubt that chupacabras are indeed around. The lore surrounding chupacabras suggests that these creatures suck the blood of their prey, usually livestock. Accounts of humans proclaiming a chupacabra found vary, and in some cases the cryptid animal is said to be the size of a bear, while in others it features dinosaur like spikes on its back, hinting toward a more reptilian origin.

Chupacabra Found - It's a Coyote?

Texas State University reported in 2007 that the chupacabra found in Cuero was actually a coyote. Testing involved DNA sampling, which provided the most surefire way of putting to bed the rumors swirling around the chupacabra pictures.

Will the same hold true for the Rosenberg, Texas chupacabra found dead in a barn just recently? Again a doglike creature devoid of hair was discovered and before long supposed chupacabra pictures began circulating. As reported by KHOU-TV, the carcass is in the hands of a taxidermist. It looks remarkably like the chupacabra pictures released over the last few years.

Analysis of the Chupacabra Pictures

At first glance, the number of chupacabra pictures coming out of Texas -- and the initial identification of the 2007 specimen as a coyote -- makes it highly likely that within the state a mutation of the common coyote has taken place. Perhaps illness, changes in the environment, or other influences causing an alteration of the DNA have caused a number of generations of animals to change to such an extent that their skin color is changed, and their ability to grow fur is compromised.

On the other hand, a chupacabra found in Stilwell, Oklahoma, puts this theory of localized mutation or evolution in question. A chupacabra picture posted by News on 6 shows an animal eerily similar to the chupacabra found in Texas.

Are chupacabras a new breed that is spreading across the United States - or was the chupacabra never more than a mutated coyote in the first place?

I was recently reading this about van jones quotes and thought it may make a good post to my blog.



The Obama administration has been making a strategy of appointing "czars" in a huge power grab that has been centralizing authority to the White House. Problem is, these "czars" are not elected by anyone and they exist outside of the oversight of the Congress. This strategy has been questioned by none other than Democratic Senator Robert Byrd, currently the longest-serving Senator, who has even questioned the constitutionality of the appointment of "czars" as they appear to violate the constitutional system of checks and balances.

Given the fact that these White House advisors are clearly an effort by the Obama administration to evade oversight, it would be wise to take a critical look at the people being appointed to these positions of power. On March 10, 2009, Van Jones was appointed by Obama to be the Special Advisor on Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation for the White House Council on Environmental Quality; in other words, Jones is Obama's newly appointed "Green Jobs Czar."

Van Jones, age 41, is a graduate of Yale Law School and a civil rights lawyer. He co-founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, a "non-profit agency for justice, opportunities and peace." Jones wrote 2008's The Green Collar Economy, his book about green jobs. Jones is the also the founder of Green for All, another non-profit that promotes an "inclusive green economy." On the surface, it seems that he would be a good choice as an advisor to the President. But, there is much more to this self described radical communist and black nationalist.

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, co-founded by Van Jones, was named for a little known civil rights activist. Her biography on the website states she was "a respected and influential leader in the fight for human and civil rights until her death on December 13, 1986." Nowhere, however, will you find that she was an avowed socialist. According to World Net Daily, Baker's ideas have been credited with influencing the philosophy of the Students for a Democratic Society, from which the Weathermen evolved. The "legal" support network for the Weather Underground was the Prairie Fire Organizing committee, a far-left group with which Baker was involved. Furthermore, in 1976, Baker participated in a conference, "Hard Times," the purpose of which was to unite the far-left into a new communist party here in the United States. The organizer of this meeting was Jennifer Dohrn, sister of Bernadine Dohrn. You might recognize those names. Bernadine is the husband of Weatherman radical Bill Ayres, whose ties to President Obama were highly publicized during the 2008 campaign.

Van Jones was also a founder of another radical group, STORM (Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement.) STORM was founded in 1994 initially to protest the Gulf War and went on to become one of the most active radical groups working with communist leaders in the San Francisco Bay area. One most curious item regarding Van Jones' involvement with STORM is that a STORM newsletter ran a tribute to the late Marxist revolutionary Amilcar Cabral, leader of the Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands. It is reported that Van Jones named his son after Cabral and quotes the communist letter to conclude his emails.

After STORM, Jones moved on to environmentalist causes. In a 2005 interview, he even made the claim that his environmental activism was a way to fight for racial and class justice. In 1992, Jones was arrested and held briefly during the protest that ensued after the Rodney King verdict was handed down. Regarding his custody, Van Jones told the East Bay Express in 2005, "I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th (1992), and then the verdicts came down on April 29th. By August, I was a communist. (...)I met all these young radical people of color - I mean really radical: communist and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary."

Jones continued, "I'll work with anybody, I'll fight anybody if it will push our issues forward. I'm willing to forgo the cheap satisfaction of the radical pose for the deep satisfaction of radical ends."

"There is a green wave coming, with renewable energy, organic agriculture, cleaner production. Our question is: Will the green wave lift all boats? That's the moral challenge to the people who are the architects of this new, ecologically sound economy." He then states, "Will we have eco-equity or will we have eco-apartheid? Right now we have eco-apartheid."

So, Van Jones, the activist who has participated in a plethora of activities such as radical Black Nationalism, communism and anarchism, is our nation's new Green Jobs Czar. The White House Blog states his duties will be to create green job-generating climate policy and ensuring equal opportunity in the administration's energy proposals. To achieve this, billions of dollars are being spent to create the green jobs, "careers of the future." These billions are flowing through the White House Council on Environmental Quality without any congressional oversight.

President Barack Obama wrote about himself in his memoir, "To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists." It appears that Obama continues to choose his friends carefully. Maybe we ought to pay better attention to those he chooses.

kyle prater has been in the newsworthiness nowadays so i thought you may want to learn about it here.

Kyle Prater has made his choice: The class of 2010’s top-ranked receiver and No. 2 recruit in the nation is committing to USC.

The Chicago Tribune reports Prater (6-4, 205, Proviso West High, Illinois) will confirm the decision today at a 12:30 p.m. press conference.

He reportedly chose USC over Notre Dame, Illinois, Oklahoma and Tennessee. He is on course to enroll in the spring.

The Trojans are still fairly young at receiver, as their entire crop from this season has at least another year of eligibility. Junior Damian Williams is the only viable candidate to leave for the NFL.

In an effort to bring ecologically friendly modes of transportation to the Chico community, a team of eight mechanical engineering students have designed, built and tested a vehicle powered solely by human energy. The project was designed as a collaborative effort between the Mechanical Engineering Program and the Center for Entrepreneurship at California State University, Chico.

Supervised by faculty advisor Greg Watkins, the engineering team (composed of Lindsay Leahy, Jeff Croshal, Aaron Brooks, Josh Pasos, Brent Locklin, Thaddeus Barry, Kyle Hartlet and Stacey Cubillo) exhibited their prototype at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Human Powered Vehicle Competition in Portland, Ore., placing in the top three in vehicle design. At the competition the aerodynamically designed vehicle competed in speed and endurance tests and was judged in maneuverability, practicality and design efficiency.

Not exactly a bicycle, the Human Powered Utility Vehicle is fully enclosed and operates with two wheels in front and one in back. The operator uses a joystick in each hand to shift, brake and steer, while pedaling to provide energy.

The main purpose of the project was to design and build a human powered vehicle that would compete with commuter bicycles on the market today. With most bikes of similar design selling for over $3,000, the student engineers and entrepreneurs built a pedal-powered prototype that could theoretically sell for half the price. The Human Powered Utility Vehicle was built with the mechanical integrity of a vehicle—considerations such as reliability, safety and efficiency were paramount throughout the manufacture and design process.

“Chico is a very bicycle-oriented community,” said project member Lindsay Leahy. “We saw a market for pedal-powered commuter vehicles in the Chico Community and decided to develop a prototype in order to explore the feasibility of bringing a less-costly version to Chico.”

The project was awarded funding through the Associated Students Sustainability Fund, paid for by the Associated Students and managed by the Institute for Sustainable Development at CSU, Chico. Over $80,000 a semester is awarded through this fund to students who are dedicated to executing and improving sustainable practices at California State University, Chico and in the surrounding community.
